|Where Time Dropped Me Off|

I crossed the room to sit down at my desk,
to contemplate a fire from afar -
a voyeur in a mirror at the bar,
a common scene of lovers in a kiss,
oblivious to others who are near.
But soon the screen grew dark; they disappeared.
yet linger in my thoughts and take me back …
From here I watch the string of twinkling lights,
the ones I strung around our fireplace logs -
as substitutes for flames of blazing fires
that choke us with the smoke that cannot vent,
stifled by the winds that swirl above us,
as in our younger days we’d never dare
to publicly display our private love.
